If your AC or heat starts to malfunction, go through the following items before putting in a work order:
1. Make sure your thermostat batteries aren’t dead
2. Make sure your furnace filter is good (should be changed every 6 months minimum)
3. Make sure the filter of your outside AC unit is not blocked or clogged
Excess detergent/water build-up can be the cause of this. Do use an excessive amount of detergent and leave your washer lid open after loads to dry properly. Avoid using fabric softener, as it can clog up your washing machine and encourage mold growth.
If you only lose power to some things in your house, check your breaker box and reset the affected fuses. If it is a full power outage, call the local power company (Mid-American) as the outage may be widespread.
Oftentimes, draining or smell issues are caused by a filter that needs to be cleaned. Locate the filter and remove it, soak it in warm water and dish soap, and scrub any debris out with a sponge or soft bristle brush, rinse it in hot water, scrub around the opening where the filter came from, and put the filter back in.
